What Is a Pip in Forex?

A pip (Percentage In Point) is the smallest standardized price movement in the forex market. For most currency pairs quoted to 4 decimal places, one pip equals 0.0001. For Japanese yen pairs (JPY), one pip equals 0.01 due to lower pricing decimals.

Understanding pip values is the foundation of forex risk management. Before you can calculate position size, lot size, or potential profit, you must first know how much each pip is worth in your account currency.

Standard 4-Decimal Pairs

EUR/USD: 1.08500 → 1.08510 = 1 pip

Pip Size: 0.0001

JPY Pairs (2-Decimal)

USD/JPY: 149.50 → 149.51 = 1 pip

Pip Size: 0.01

How Pip Values Are Calculated

Pip value depends on three factors: the currency pair being traded, the lot size, and your account currency. The formula for a USD-quoted pair is:

Pip Value = (Pip Size ÷ Exchange Rate) × Lot Size × 100,000

For EUR/USD with a standard lot (1.0): 0.0001 / 1.08500 × 100,000 ≈ $9.22 per pip. For simplicity, brokers typically round this to $10 per pip for 1 standard lot.

This value fluctuates slightly with exchange rate changes. For cross pairs (e.g., EUR/GBP), the pip value must also be converted to your account currency using the current exchange rate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pip in forex trading?

A pip is the smallest standard price movement in forex. For most pairs, one pip = 0.0001. For JPY pairs, one pip = 0.01. It's the base unit for measuring profit, loss, and stop loss distances.

How much is a pip worth in USD?

For a standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD, one pip is worth approximately $10. For a mini lot (10,000 units), it's ~$1. For a micro lot (1,000 units), it's ~$0.10. Values vary by pair and current exchange rates.

Why does pip value differ by currency pair?

Pip value varies because different pairs have different exchange rates and base/quote currency structures. For pairs where USD is the quote currency (e.g., EUR/USD), pip values are more straightforward. Cross pairs require additional currency conversion.

What is a pipette?

A pipette (also called a fractional pip) is one-tenth of a pip. Most modern brokers quote to 5 decimal places for 4-decimal pairs and 3 decimal places for JPY pairs. Pipettes allow finer pricing but the pip remains the standard reference unit.

How do I use pip value in risk management?

Once you know the pip value for your chosen pair and lot size, you can calculate your stop loss in dollar terms: Dollar Risk = Pips × Pip Value. Then use the position size formula to determine how many lots to trade within your risk budget.
